Wittman Statement on Tax Day

Press Release

Date: April 15, 2013
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Taxes

Congressman Rob Wittman (VA-1) released the following statement on Tax Day, Monday, April 15, 2013:

"Today, as our economy has stalled and unemployment remains high, many Virginians will write a check to the U.S. government. While government plays a vital role in our society, we also know that government spending has reached out-of-control levels, leaving many taxpayers frustrated. Hardworking individuals and families, skeptical that Washington can spend their dollars wisely, deserve a better, more efficient, fairer tax code. I am a strong supporter of fundamental tax reform that ensures an equitable, responsible tax code that truly serves citizens well. I will continue to fight for an effective government that spends prudently and rewards hard work."

Wittman is a cosponsor of the following legislation that would reform the way government taxes and spends:

Fair Tax Act of 2013: This legislation would repeal the income tax and employment tax, as well as the estate and gift tax, and replace them with a sales tax on goods and services purchased in the United States. The rate of this sales tax would be consistent across the country for every citizen.

Tax Code Termination Act: This legislation would terminate the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 after December 31, 2017, and requires that Congress approve a new federal tax system by July 4, 2017.

Balanced Budget Amendment: This legislation would require Congress to limit federal spending to the amount of revenue received by the government in each fiscal year, unless three-fifths of the Congress specifically authorizes additional spending for special circumstances such as a declaration of war.

Congressman Rob Wittman represents the First District of Virginia. He serves on the House Natural Resources Committee and the House Armed Services Committee where he is the Chairman of the Readiness Subcommittee.
