Pompeo's Statement on Passage of KeystoneXL Pipeline Legislation

Statement

Date: April 17, 2013
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Oil and Gas

"The delay of the KeystoneXL pipeline has nothing to do with an additional Clean Water Act permit, or an Endangered Species Act review related to a beetle. It has everything to with a well-executed agenda aimed at opposing hydrocarbons. The Administration has delayed, at every step of the way, a pipeline designed with the highest safety specifications, despite knowing that it will create tens of thousands of jobs and increased energy security. The Administration has dragged its feet for years in approving permits for oil and gas exploration on federal lands. The Administration through its EPA has attempted to put the domestic coal industry out of business with its countless utility regulations, including pending greenhouse gas regulations.

"This President has to eventually cave to common-sense. But we can't sit back and wait. Every day this project is delayed sends a message to the companies looking to invest in affordable energy that developing in the United States is a risky proposition. This is unacceptable. We need this pipeline approved now, and we need the next pipeline, and the pipeline after that, given a chance to develop under a process that is fair, certain and transparent, without politics and without the influence of a radical environmentalist agenda."
