"I was on the phone with my wife Terri when the explosion took place. She and my son Jack felt the blast in Ennis. The devastation in West is almost impossible to comprehend. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, the missing, the injured and the displaced. Many of them were first responders or good Samaritans rushing into help their neighbors.
"Our friends to the south will need our help as they sift through the damage and start to put their lives back together. I have spoken to Congressman Flores, who represents West, and offered to assist him and his constituents in any way possible. I know many of you are also already jumping into help - offering services, making donations and giving blood. It is a true testament to the heart of this community.
"As the facts start to surface about what happened, we will monitor them on a federal level and do what we can to make sure this doesn't happen again.
"Recovery from something like this is never easy, but the people of McClennan County are strong, faithful and resilient. I stand with them as they continue to morn and start to heal."
