Gardner Prepares Legislation to Tackle Duplicative Programs, Wasteful Spending

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

With the release of the third annual Government Accountability Office (GAO) report detailing duplicative government programs and wasteful spending, Congressman Cory Gardner (CO-04) is preparing to re-introduce legislation directing Congress to take action on the report's findings.

"The money we have in our government coffers is the product of someone's hard work and time away from their family, it shouldn't be wasted" Gardner said. "Until the federal government stops spending $95 billion a year on overlapping programs, the President and Senate should stop clamoring for tax increases. We should be working on spending the money we do have as wisely as possible."

Gardner's legislation, which will be formally introduced on Thursday, will force Congressional hearings on the GAO report's findings. Members of Congress will have to decide whether the programs listed should be reformed, combined or eliminated.

According to the GAO report examples of waste, duplication and fragmentation:

23 agencies implemented hundreds of renewable energy initiatives in fiscal year 2010--the latest year for which GAO developed these original data.

There are 76 federal programs addressing drug abuse prevention and treatment.

In 2012, $19.2 billion (7.1 percent) of Medicaid's federal expenditures involved improper payments--including payments made for treatments or services that were not covered by program rules, that were not medically necessary, or that were billed for but never provided.

The Department of Defense wastes $82 million on the fragmented development and acquisition of uniforms for service members.
