Coats Votes to Strengthen Current Gun Laws and Safeguard Second Amendment

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Senator Dan Coats (R-Ind.) today voted to preserve the Second Amendment while providing important fixes to existing gun laws.

Earlier today, Coats introduced along with Senators Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) the Protecting Communities and Preserving the Second Amendment Act as an amendment to the gun legislation pending on the Senate floor. This amendment would strengthen criminal gun laws by increasing resources for prosecuting gun trafficking, better enforce the existing background check system and address school safety and mental illness in the criminal justice system. The amendment, which achieved bipartisan support, needed 60 votes to pass. It failed 52-48.

"I am disappointed the Senate failed to pass this sensible legislation that focuses on addressing the underlying problems of gun violence and better enforcing the current background check system," said Coats. "While no legislation will prevent all acts of violence, we can work to improve existing laws and address mental health gaps in our society while still protecting the rights guaranteed to Americans by the Constitution. This amendment would have achieved that goal."

"Reducing gun violence in our country is an important discussion, and I am glad we are having this debate in Congress," added Coats. "While I appreciate the good-faith effort of many senators to address this significant issue, I will not support legislation that fails to address the real problems that lead to gun violence and would infringe on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens."
