Rockefeller Applauds DOD Decision to Protect the Precedence of Combat Decorations

Location: Washington, DC

Senator Jay Rockefeller today thanked Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel for preserving the precedence of combat decorations over a new medal honoring drone pilots and cyber warriors.

The decision comes a month after Rockefeller joined Senator Joe Manchin and a bipartisan group of 20 other Senators in signing a letter to Secretary Hagel asking him to reverse course on a DoD plan to give the newly created Distinguished Warfare Medal precedence over combat awards like the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

"We hold in profoundly high regard those men and women who proudly wear the uniform of the United States military and put themselves in harm's way to protect our nation," Rockefeller said. "I'm thrilled that Secretary Hagel--a veteran himself--is recognizing the unique heroism of our combat veterans by maintaining the precedence of decorations earned during battle."
