An amendment offered by U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), the Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, and Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), the Chairman of the committee, to reauthorize and improve programs dealing with awareness, prevention, and early identification of mental health problems was accepted today with 95 votes.

"This amendment will improve prevention, early intervention, and treatment of mental illness in our schools, our universities, our communities, and in our doctors' offices. It is the result of many hours of work by both Republican and Democratic senators to find smart and efficient solutions to meet the mental health needs of our children and others, so they get the help they need as early as possible."
