Lower Than Expected Jobs Numbers for March "A Punch in the Gut" Says Terry

Location: Omaha, NE

Representative Lee Terry (R-NE), Chairman of the Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, today made the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) its released monthly report announcing only 88,000 jobs had been added to the economy in the month of March:

"We need leadership from President Obama and that starts with designating someone to lead the Commerce Department. It's been nine months without a Secretary of Commerce.

"As Chairman of CMT, I'm hearing every day how our nation of builders can't find skilled workers to fill the jobs that are currently available. During our district work period, I met with manufacturers across Omaha, and learned many aren't even able to find applicants with the needed skills -- let alone hire the workers to grow their business.

"But to continue creating jobs and sustain economic growth, we need to balance the budget by getting our nation's finances in order; reform our nation's antiquated tax code; and, secure our energy independence by building the Keystone XL pipeline."

"Today's report was a punch in the gut. Let's get those who want a job the skills they need and put the middle class back to work."
