Restore the Promise of Equal Pay for Equal Work, Says Rep. George Miller

U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.), the senior Democrat on the House Education and the Workforce Committee, issued the following statement today on Equal Pay Day. Each year, National Equal Pay Day reflects how far into the current year women must work to match what men earned in the previous year. Today, the typical American woman working full time is paid only 77 cents for every dollar paid to her male counterpart, according to U.S. Census data. This earnings gap translates to $11,084 in less pay per year for women.

"Fifty years after the Equal Pay Act was signed into law, women make up half the American workforce, but their paychecks still lag far behind men's. Paying people less because of their gender isn't just morally wrong, it's also a drag on our economy. The existence of this pay gap demands congressional action. That's why I'm a proud co-sponsor of the Paycheck Fairness Act. It is time to restore the promise of equal pay for equal work."
