McNerney's Request For Funding The Lower San Joaquin River Feasibility Study Included In The President's Budget Proposal

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Jerry McNerney (D-Stockton) announced that President Obama included funding for the Lower San Joaquin Feasibility River Study in his Fiscal Year 2014 Budget proposal. On Dec. 6, 2012, Congressman McNerney wrote to Assistant Secretary Jo-Ellen Darcy of the Army for Civil Works and Acting Director Jeffery Zients, urging them to fully fund the study.

"In San Joaquin County alone, 450,000 Californians rely on flood protection. Fully funding this study will ensure that residents can continue to be protected from floods and that the water supply in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta remains intact," said Congressman McNerney.

The Lower San Joaquin River Feasibility Study is essential for flood protection, ecosystem restoration, and the state's water supply. In California, 24 million people rely on the protected water supply from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Region. This water supply provides irrigation to seven million acres of agricultural land across the state.

"I am glad that the president chose to fund this study, ultimately creating jobs, improving our infrastructure, and restoring the environment. This is a critical initiative not only for the people of the Central Valley, but all of California," said Congressman McNerney. "This study is a great example of how partnerships between all levels of government as well as private entities can yield positive results, providing increased protection from flooding and investing in our infrastructure."

The Lower San Joaquin River Feasibility Study is a partnership at all levels, including federal, state, and local governments, as well as local public and private entities, including 11 Reclamation Districts.
