Matsui Announces Funding for Sacramento Region Projects in President's Budget Outline

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) released the following statement in response to the funding for local flood and transportation projects that was included in President Obama's Fiscal Year 2014 budget. The budget allocates over $75 million to Sacramento's flood projects, $3 million for Sacramento Regional Transit's South Line Phase II Extension, and $1.5 million to West Sacramento for the Port's Deep Water Ship Channel Dredging.

"The President's budget proposal for FY 2014 is a balanced approach that makes needed investments to grow our economy, create jobs and strengthen the middle class while further reducing the deficit. Though we continue to operate under tight, fiscal constraints, the President's budget proposal will ensure that many of Sacramento's projects will continue to receive needed federal support.

"Flood protection is essential to the safety and economic vitality of our region, and it remains my number one priority and a top priority for many in the Sacramento region. In his FY 2014 budget, the President has requested over $75 million to fund Sacramento's flood protection projects. These projects will help our region achieve 200-year flood protection, protecting lives, property and infrastructure. The President's budget outline is a good start for Sacramento's flood priorities and I will continue to fight for full funding for all of our flood protection projects.

"I am also very pleased to see that the Obama Administration continues its support for RT's South Line Phase II Extension. The President has requested an additional $3 million for the project. This funding, combined with the $135 million previously allocated, will help spur much-needed hiring in our construction sector, enable RT to complete the project in a timely manner, and provide additional public transportation options to Sacramento residents.

"Finally, the President's budget outline includes $1.5 million to West Sacramento for the Port's Deep Water Ship Channel Dredging. This funding is for operating and maintaining the Deep Water Ship Canal and will help facilitate commerce at the Port of West Sacramento."

The President's budget calls for the following funding levels for Sacramento's flood protection projects:

Folsom Dam Joint Federal Project -- $66,400,000
To continue construction on the auxiliary spillway, which will provide greater efficiency in managing flood storage in Folsom Reservoir and 200-year level of protection to much of Sacramento.

Folsom Dam Raise - $3,150,000
To raise the Folsom Dam to improve the region's flood protection.

Sacramento River Bank Protection - $3,000,000
To repair and improve levees along the Sacramento River.

American River Watershed Common Features - $2,500,000
For levee work along the American River Watershed, including further design work in support of levee improvements in Natomas and across Sacramento.
