John Kline Statement on the President's Budget for 2014

Location: Washington, DC

Minnesota Congressman John Kline issued the following statement today after the president released his budget for 2014:

"Years of reckless spending and borrowing have led to the weakest economic recovery since the Great Depression. The president had an opportunity today to offer a new vision for our country, one that would encourage job creation and a healthy economy. Instead, he offered no new ideas to address the significant challenges facing American families.

"Minnesota families know the importance of maintaining a balanced budget, and they expect Washington to do the same. They understand they can't spend more than they earn, and know when to make tough choices to avoid taking on unnecessary debt. The federal government should do no less.

"For the fifth year in a row, we do not have a plan from the president that will balance the budget. We do not have a plan from the president that will end Washington's spending addiction. We do not have a plan from the president that will rein in the deficit without raising taxes on families and small businesses. And we do not have a plan from the president that will preserve the safety net for our nation's seniors and vulnerable families.

"Despite the president's missed opportunity, Republicans will not stop working toward the bold reforms needed to get our economy moving again and put Americans back to work. We are determined to offer fresh ideas and advance commonsense solutions that will support a stronger middle class, a leaner federal government, and a brighter future for our children. House Republicans have offered a responsible plan -- a budget that balances -- to reduce waste and put our nation back on track.

"Minnesotans are tired of the partisan bickering and petty politics in Washington. I look forward in the coming weeks to setting aside our differences and coming together in areas where we agree so we can help rebuild a healthier economy and foster opportunities for all Americans ensuring our children and grandchildren can look forward to a more prosperous future."
