McCaskill Meets With Top Highway Safety Official After Assuming New Oversight Role

As part of her expanding oversight work, U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill met today with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's top official-an agency within the jurisdiction of McCaskill's new Senate panel on consumer protection.

"We have to ensure the traveling public can move about the country without unnecessary hassle and in a manner that protects public safety," McCaskill said. "I look forward to working with the Administrator on these goals, and know we'll do whatever we can to keep families safe on America's roadways."

McCaskill and Administrator David Strickland discussed a variety of issues critical to the nation's transportation policy including distracted driving, rental car policy, and implementation of the new highway bill passed by Congress last year.

McCaskill has served on the Senate Committee on Commerce, which has jurisdiction over aviation and communications policy, since joining the Senate in 2007 and this year was named Chairman of the Subcommittee on Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Insurance. That panel has oversight jurisdiction over several federal agencies, including NHTSA.
