Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) today announced more than $16.5 million in federal funding for New Jersey families affected by HIV/AIDS. This funding, through the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, will help low-income New Jersey families pay for primary health services related to HIV/AIDS.

"This federal funding will help ease the financial burden of HIV and AIDS treatment for thousands of New Jersey families," said Senator Lautenberg, a member of the Appropriations Committee, which funds this program. "I was proud to help secure passage of the Ryan White CARE Act, and have continued fighting for victims of HIV and AIDS and working to secure the support and health care they need."

Lautenberg was an original cosponsor of the The Ryan White CARE Act, which is the largest source of federal funding dedicated to HIV/AIDS care. The bill was passed by Congress in 1990 and has been re-authorized four times since, most recently in 2009. The program is named for Ryan White, an Indiana teenager that was diagnosed with HIV in 1984 and died from AIDS in 1990, only months before the legislation was passed.

This grant is funded through Part B of the Ryan White program, which provides primary medical care and support services, including counseling, medication, and rehabilitation services, for low-income families affected by HIV/AIDS.
