Esty Stands Up to Ryan Budget that Would Hurt Families in CT

Today, Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (CT-5) voted against an extreme budget proposal, introduced by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, that would end the Medicare guarantee and devastate families in Connecticut. Yesterday, Esty voted in favor of a commonsense budget plan, introduced by House Budget Committee Ranking Member Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), that would encourage job creation, preserve critical investments for Connecticut seniors and families including the Medicare guarantee, and make smart, effective cuts to reduce the deficit.

"This is about priorities. The priorities of the Ryan budget are wrong for Connecticut and, frankly, make no sense -- protecting tax breaks for the wealthiest and special interests at the expense of seniors and middle class families, and costing jobs at a critical moment for our economy," Esty said. "Connecticut seniors can't afford to pay more for prescription drugs and preventive services or to lose access to nursing home care. Folks nearing retirement can't afford to be forced into a voucher system. Connecticut's small businesses and manufacturers can't afford another self-inflicted fiscal crisis after making so many strides through a tough economy. I voted for the Van Hollen budget because it reflects the priorities of folks in Connecticut -- investments in manufacturing, transportation and infrastructure, education, keeping our commitments to seniors, and making smart cuts to reduce the deficit. Those are the budget priorities I'm going to continue to support in Congress."
