Sen. Franken's Statement on Marriage Equality

Location: Unknown

Today, U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) issued the following statement as the Supreme Court hears oral arguments on the Defense of Marriage Act and California's Proposition 8:

"I've been married to Franni for 37 years - it's the best thing that ever happened to me, and I think every loving couple should have the same opportunity," said Sen. Franken. "As a longtime advocate for marriage equality, I am overjoyed by the growing momentum of support to recognize all families. First in Minnesota when we 'voted no' to barring same-sex couples from getting married and now in Congress where the freedom to marry continues to gain support on both sides of the aisle. Our country is beginning to understand that it's not about what a family looks like: it's about their love and commitment to one another. I hope the Supreme Court takes that into consideration."
