Congresswoman Jackie Walorski (IN-02) today supported a bill sponsored by Congressman Luke Messer (IN-06) requiring the President to tell Congress how much future deficits will cost taxpayers (H.R. 668). This legislation passed with overwhelming bipartisan support, with a final vote of 392-28.
"I applaud the passage of Rep. Messer's legislation to bring Hoosier common sense to Congress," said Walorski. "This bill enforces a basic principle to restore transparency at the federal level, illustrating the impacts of decision-making in Washington and the effects on American families and future generations."
If signed into law, the President must include a calculation in the annual budget submission detailing the per-taxpayer cost of any yearly deficit in that budget. Based on the amount of tax returns filed in the most recent year, each taxpayer owes roughly $6,896 to cover the estimated one-trillion dollar shortfall in the President's last budget.
"Hoosier families sit around their kitchen tables and make tough decisions to keep a budget. They deserve to know exactly how Washington spending influences our nation's deficit to ensure the President and lawmakers are making responsible decisions with their hard earned dollars."
