We are writing to urge you to vote in favor of S.47, the Senate-passed version of Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013. S.47, which has 61 bipartisan cosponsors, passed overwhelmingly in the Senate by a vote of 78-22. Now is the time for the House to show their support of reauthorizing these important programs by passing the Senate version.
As you know, the most recent VAWA expired in 2011, and we are long overdue to reauthorize these programs. We have found that VAWA programs are critical to our communities -- they make effective use of federal dollars by integrating with a criminal justice framework that helps curb domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking of women across America. VAWA programs save lives, and we must allow states and communities the opportunity to build upon the successes of current VAWA programs so that we can help even more people.
We applaud House leadership for allowing members to have an up-or-down vote on S.47 and urge you to vote in favor of Senate-passed Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013.
