Rep Walberg Votes to Protect Welfare Work Requirements

Statement

Date: March 13, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Today Rep Walberg voted in favor of H.R. 890, the Preserving Work Requirements for Welfare Programs Act. H.R. 890 would block the Obama administration's July 2012 decision to waive welfare work requirements that were critical to the success of the bipartisan 1996 Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program.

"The first steps to financial independence are a healthy economy and a job. Work requirements have helped millions of American reduce their dependency on government assistance and get back on their feet again. I saw it happen in Michigan when I worked as a state legislator when we adopted similar work requirements, and again, nationally after the 1996 reforms. We must prevent the president from undermining a program so critical in reducing poverty for low-income Americans," commented Rep Walberg following the vote.
