Congresswoman Barbara Lee Stands for Marriage Equality

Statement

Date: March 26, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

"There are two separate cases in front of the Supreme Court this week, but at heart, they are the same issue: equal rights. The right to marry is a fundamental issue of justice, and if we truly stand for equality, we must stand for equality for everyone.

"As a Californian and as a Member of Congress, I believe strongly that it is past time for the clear discrimination of Prop. 8 on the state level and DOMA on the federal level to come to an end.

"It is my hope that as we continue this fight for equality on all fronts, the Supreme Court will rule on the right side of history and reaffirm that marriage is a civil right guaranteed under the Constitution. Repealing DOMA and Prop 8 will move our nation one step further in the long march toward ensuring equal protections and rights for all people. And, as a founding member of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, I will continue to fight until equal rights are enjoyed by all."
