Congressman Tierney Votes in Opposition to Irresponsible Republican Budget

Press Release

Date: March 21, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman John Tierney voted against the reckless Ryan-Republican budget that provides huge tax cuts for the wealthy while including measures that would slow our economic recovery, destroy American jobs, and end the Medicare guarantee. Instead, Congressman Tierney voted for certain alternative budget measures that reduce our deficit while maintaining critical investments in our middle-class.

"Earlier today, House Republicans once again pushed through an irresponsible and reckless budget that would hurt our economic recovery and end the Medicare guarantee. Rather than address the concerns and priorities of the middle class, the Ryan-Republican budget simply presents more of the same failed policies and misplaced priorities that the American people resoundingly rejected last fall," Congressman Tierney said.

In the Ryan-Republican budget, Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan again tries to advance the failed proposals of the last two years. This Republican budget is projected to result in two million fewer American jobs next year alone, decrease GDP 1.7 percent, and stall our nation's recovery. Further, the Republican budget could raise taxes on middle class families with children by more than $3,000 per year to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy.

"The American people deserve better. I supported alternative plans that are fair and balanced -- creating growth with jobs, cutting spending responsibly, and reducing the deficit," Tierney concluded.
