Letter to Craig Fugate, Administrator of FEMA - Flood Maps

Letter

Date: March 5, 2013
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Infrastructure

After hearing from nearly 50 local residents, Congressman John Tierney today urged the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to implement the process by which homeowners and lessees can receive certain reimbursements for successfully challenging their inclusion in FEMA's updated flood maps. These residents, and more than 350 others in Tierney's district, successfully challenged FEMA's updated flood maps. The law gives residents who successfully challenged their inclusion in FEMA's updated flood maps the opportunity to apply for reimbursements, but FEMA has not yet implemented this reimbursement process. Additionally, noting that there is a 93% success rate for those who challenge their home's inclusion in the updated flood map, Tierney also pressed FEMA about the accuracy of the updated map.

"More than 400 local residents have successfully challenged their inclusion in FEMA's updated flood maps. They incurred the cost of hiring the necessary professionals to challenge this decision, which I understand can be over a thousand dollars. While the law directs FEMA to establish a process for these residents to be reimbursed for certain costs, FEMA still hasn't acted. This is unacceptable, and that's why I am pressing FEMA to move quickly to implement the reimbursement process," Congressman Tierney said.
