Gingrey: We must do more to cut spending

Location: Washington, DC

As a physician for more than 30 years and an outspoken opponent of Obamacare, I understand first-hand the devastating effects this law will have on patients, physicians, and our health care system. This disastrous law has yet to be fully implemented, yet job creators across the country are already feeling its effects. The federal government's takeover of one-sixth of our economy increases health care costs, threatens patient access, and imposes massive tax increases on Americans, particularly middle class families and young adults. Given that the continuing resolution, H.R. 933, provides funding for Obamacare implementation and the government mandate, I could not support this legislation.

We also must do more to cut spending. We must use every opportunity to get our fiscal house in order, and time is running out. The federal government will spend about $845 billion more than it takes in this year and is estimated to add $7 trillion to the national debt in the next decade. H.R. 933 may temporarily slow runaway spending, but it does not address the root of the problem.

Identifying and eliminating wasteful government spending, as well as defunding programs like Planned Parenthood, should have also been incorporated into this legislation.

In order to deal with our enormous fiscal problems, Congress must return to regular order. This means passing and operating within the confines of a budget, as well as debating and passing all annual appropriations bills.
