The House voted on a bill that will mandate that FEMA conduct a study to assess the options and strategies for offering voluntary community based flood insurance. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen was pleased to vote for the legislation because if the study is transformed to policy it would allow entire communities to buy bulk flood insurance coverage for their residents rather than have each individual resident buy a policy.
Ros-Lehtinen represents a South Florida district that is flood prone so any legislation that seeks to improve the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is attractive to her. This study will also explore ways to incorporate this community based flood insurance coverage into the overall flood insurance program.
Said Ros-Lehtinen, "I supported this bill because my constituents deserve to know that FEMA is evaluating ways to effectively provide flood insurance options that will provide communities with incentives to mitigate future flood losses and bring down costs. I am committed to improving the NFIP and this study is one way of doing so. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to take up this important bill."
