U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Middle East and North Africa, released the following statement regarding the AMIA "truth commission" agreement between Iran and Argentina. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
"The so-called "truth commission' formed by the misguided officials in Argentina in coercion with the Iranian regime to investigate the 1994 AMIA Jewish community center bombing is a travesty to the memories of those who lost their lives in the deadly blast. Iran, a U.S. designated state sponsor of terrorism, for years has known the identity of these culprits and has chosen to harbor these fugitives instead of handing them over to the proper law enforcement authorities to hold them accountable.
As sanctions against the Iranian regime are expanded and enforced, Iran's alliances in the Western Hemisphere should continue to be scrutinized as they can pose a national security threat to our nation. It is cause for alarm that, according to reports, a former Iranian central bank chief was captured with a check for approximately $70 million from the bank of Venezuela in what is believed to be an attempt by the Iranian regime to curtail international sanctions that have been placed on it. These reports illustrate that nefarious intent behind the Iranian regime and it would be naïve to think that Iran would fully cooperate in any investigation that implicates high ranking officials in their own establishment as well as their belligerent proxy Hezbollah, a U.S. designated terrorist organization. Hezbollah and its terrorist network, with support from Iran, has conducted attacks throughout the world that have left countless dead and even more injured. In fact, just last week, Hezbollah was implicated in the July 2012 bombing of a bus in Bulgaria that was filled with Israeli tourists.
It is inconceivable that the government of Argentina is so eager to work with those who masterminded the very attack against its own people. Iran's involvement in this "truth commission' only deteriorates any chances of obtaining any real justice for the families and victims of the 1994 AMIA Jewish community center bombing and provides them a platform to advocate their extremist propaganda."
