Statement

This week, with my support, House Republicans passed a plan that would balance our budget over the next ten years. This budget plan will fully repeal Obamacare, the President's misguided health care law that is raising premiums on American families and making it harder for small businesses and manufacturers to hire. This budget will also pave the way for comprehensive tax reform that will help grow our economy. Furthermore, this budget achieves balance without raising taxes on the American people; this is in stark contrast to Democrat proposals that never achieve balance, despite raising taxes by over $1 trillion. The American people deserve a federal government that lives within its means, and this House budget has moved us closer to that goal.

Working Toward Tax Reform

This week, I participated in two Ways and Means Committee hearings on tax reform. On Tuesday, the committee heard from panelists about how federal taxes impact state and local governments. The following day, a subcommittee discussed the financial products discussion draft released by the Ways and Means Committee. Both hearings are part of the process to achieve a tax code that is simpler, flatter, fairer and easier to understand. To watch my question about protecting District 24 taxpayers, click here.

At a hearing today of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, lawmakers defended the century-old tax-exemption for investment income from municipal bonds.
"Every single taxpayer in my district will have an increase in their taxes," said Representative Kenny Marchant, a Texas Republican. "All we're going to be doing is passing that tax down to another level."

McDermott, who is working with Rep. Kenny Marchant (R-Texas) on the debt and equity group, said the groups could also help restore some of the trust that has evaporated between the parties over the years.

"A lot of people are kind of uncertain that this is really going to work this way. But up to this point, there's no evidence that it isn't," McDermott said. "Kenny Marchant and I are not playing some crazy game."

I had the opportunity to take part in a special reception honoring Sam Johnson for the 40th Anniversary of "Operation Homecoming," when he was released from a North Vietnamese prisoner of war camp.
Meeting with Sean Bryan of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation


I was happy to meet with Sean Bryan in my Washington office this week. Sean is a resident of Colleyville and is doing important work to improve children's health at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
Last Week for Submissions for the 2013 Congressional Art Competition

We are now accepting applications for the 2013 Congressional Art Competition. The winning piece will be recognized in the 24th District and at the annual awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. where it will be displayed in the Capitol for an entire year.

This contest is open to high school students who live in the 24th District. In order to register, please visit the Congressional Art Contest Webpage. The application is submitted through the website. The process is simple and it will only take you a few minutes. Participants must submit the application and a digital image of the artwork through the website by 5 p.m. Friday, March 29.

In an effort to reward participation and encourage young artists, we will be publicizing digital images of the artwork on my Facebook page during the second week of April.
