Hastings Votes Against Continuing Resolution That Locks in Sequestration Spending Levels

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement regarding his vote in opposition to Senate Amendment to H.R. 933, known as the continuing resolution, that passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 318-109:

"I voted against this continuing resolution because it locks in the sequester, which everybody in this joint knows will cause the loss of American jobs.

"The Congressional Budget Office has already said that this level of funding is detrimental to our economy, will cost Americans jobs, and could possibly trigger a recession. If this Congress would actually be about the business of addressing the country's real needs like repairing our ports, waterways, bridges, and highways, then we would actually be about the business of creating jobs. But this continuing resolution is only going to do more harm to our economy.

"We should be doing all that we can to help struggling Americans get back on their feet. Instead of chasing strawman deficits, let's get our economic house in order. Let's get to realistic spending levels that will help our country get back on track."
