Statement by U.S. Rep. Schwartz Regarding the House Republican Budget

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz (PA-13), the number two Democrat on the House Budget Committee released the following statement regarding the proposed House Republican Budget, which will be marked up by the House Budget Committee today.

"The federal budget is a statement of our priorities and values as a nation. The House Republican budget proposal ends Medicare as we know it, raises taxes on middle class families, and threatens our nation's economic growth now and into the future. This budget means higher costs for less health coverage for all Americans. And by taking the wrong approach to sustaining Medicare for future seniors, it shifts the financial burden onto our seniors and their families. The Republican budget fails to keep our promises made to our seniors and middle class families, while diminishing our economic competitiveness.

"We have a responsibility to reduce our nation's deficit and ensure America can compete in a 21st century global economy. This means taking a balanced approach: strategic spending cuts, smart tax policy reform, and investments that expand economic growth. We should not fix our deficit by failing to meet our obligations to our seniors, our children, or our future, all that does is harm American families and hurt America's future economic competitiveness.

"As a Congress, we must find a way to work together to put forth a budget that meets our commitments as a nation, is fiscally responsible, and will strengthen our economy in the short and long term."
