U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns (R-Neb.) today issued the following statement after Senate Budget Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray (D-Wash.) began a committee markup of the Senate Democrats' fiscal year 2014 budget:
"It's been four years and $5.3 trillion in added debt since Senate Democrats passed a budget. While I am glad they finally put something on the table, this budget is nothing short of a fiscal fiasco on par with Obamacare and I see no way it can be fixed.
"It's a more-of-everything proposal. More taxes, more spending, more borrowing, and more debt passed on to future generations. "
Background: The budget introduced by Murray on behalf of Senate Democrats:
* Proposes up to a $1.5 trillion tax increase in addition to another trillion dollars of new taxes set to begin as part of the President's health care law;
* Increases our nation's debt to $24.4 trillion by the end of the 10 year budget window;
* Never decreases annual borrowing to less than $400 billion per year; and
* Doesn't bring our debt below 90 percent of our entire economy in any of the years covered by the budget and projects it will eclipse 100 percent for the next four years.
