Congressman John Carney Praises House Passage Of Violence Against Women Act

Statement

Date: Feb. 28, 2013

"For far too long, the House of Representatives delayed the passage of comprehensive legislation to protect women of all backgrounds from domestic violence. I'm glad to see that a strong reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act has finally passed and will now become law.

"Since 1994, when Delaware's own Joe Biden wrote the original Violence Against Women Act, I've seen how important this legislation is for women and families across Delaware. During my time as chair of the Delaware Criminal Justice Council, I worked with law enforcement and elected officials to ensure that the legislation was effective in our state. There is no doubt that the Violence Against Women Act works -- and works well.

"Today's vote is going to make a real difference in the lives of thousands of women in Delaware and across America."
