Esty Statement on the 10th Anniversary of the War in Iraq

Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty (CT-5) released the following statement today on the tenth anniversary of the war in Iraq:

"Ten years ago today, our country began direct military involvement in Iraq that cost us dearly -- both in dollars and more importantly in lives. Over 9 years of war, we lost thousands of brave service members, tens of thousands of others were wounded, and many others returned with PTSD and wounds unseen.

"I'm grateful that so many have finally come home from Iraq and returned to their families and loved ones. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the thousands of brave service members who didn't make it back, and with the tens of thousands who continue to live with the wounds of war -- both physical and unseen.

"My thoughts and prayers are also with the tens of thousands of troops still in harm's way in Afghanistan, including my 20-year-old niece currently serving in Kabul, and every soldier and family who has made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country over a decade of two wars.

"Today, as we continue to welcome home a new generation of veterans, let us recommit to fulfilling our duty to them. Let us ensure that our service men and women and their families receive all the benefits and support that they have earned and that they deserve in employment, education, health care, and support services."
