Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement today after Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan released this year's version of the House Republican budget. DeLauro is the senior Democrat on the subcommittees responsible for funding the departments of Labor, Education, and Health and Human Services.
"The Ryan Republican budget is nothing more than a tired retread of the same ideas Americans rejected last November. It would risk our economic recovery and harm middle class families at the expense of special interests and the very wealthiest among us. This is simply unacceptable and flies in the face of key responsibility as public officials; supporting the middle class; and creating jobs and opportunities for those who strive to join it.
"The Ryan budget would continue the erosion of funding for programs we should be investing in and cut programs that protect the public health and safety, promote and develop our workforce, and educate the next generation of Americans. Just like previous years, he is repealing the Affordable Care Act, turning Medicare into a voucher program, decimating our social safety net programs like food stamps and Medicaid, and eviscerating funding for everything from food inspectors to COPS grants.
"Democrats will soon put forward a balanced proposal to grow our economy and further job growth. That should be our focus."
