Governor Jan Brewer today announced the appointment of Valerie Hanna as the 2013 Arizona Board of Regents (ABOR) Student Regent. Ms. Hanna is a sophomore at the University of Arizona.

"Valerie brings to the Arizona Board of Regents a fresh, energetic voice and a clear interest in this state's higher education issues," said Governor Brewer. "Through her strong academic record and student leadership, she has proven her commitment to improving the higher education experience for her fellow Arizona students. I am confident Valerie will be a valuable asset to ABOR and to the future of our fine system of public universities."

Ms. Hanna is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a focus on Public Policy and Law, and is slated to graduate as a member of the Class of 2015. She is active in student government as a Senator elected to the Associated Students of the University of Arizona. She has also been an Arizona Ambassador at UA for the past year, a role in which she leads campus tours and advocates on behalf of the University to prospective students.

Earlier, Ms. Hanna focused on projects to enhance the first-year experience and improve student retention rates as Outreach Chairwoman for the UA Freshman Class Council. While attending high school, she served as State President of the Arizona Association of Student Councils -- acting as the student voice on the AASC Executive Board for student leaders of more than 150 Arizona high school student councils.

Ms. Hanna's two-year term with the Arizona Board of Regents will begin July 1, 2013, pending confirmation by the Arizona State Senate. She replaces outgoing Student Regent Tyler Bowyer, whose term is expiring.
