Today, U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter voted with 199 Democrats and 87 Republicans in the House to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). Perlmutter co-sponsored the measure in the House.
Perlmutter said, "This bill strengthens and ensures strong public safety programs continue for everyone in our communities. The bill has bipartisan support in both the Senate, and ultimately in the House. I'm frustrated House Republican leadership drug their feet on reauthorizing this important bill for partisan, political reasons. However, thanks to the broad-based community and public support, we were able to come together and do the right thing. Finally - victims of violence don't have to wait any longer. The President will sign this bill."
The 2013 VAWA reauthorization significantly strengthens the ability to combat domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking.
