On the Eve of Yet Another Deadline, Leadership Has Failed

Statement

Date: March 1, 2013
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Defense

House Armed Services Readiness Subcommittee Chairman Rob Wittman (VA-1) joined with other House Armed Services Committee members today in calling on the leadership in Washington, D.C., to avert sequestration.

"On the eve of yet another deadline, leadership in Washington, D.C., has failed to come to agreement on avoiding sequestration, forced budget cuts that will cripple our military, and leave so many servicemembers, federal employees and federal contractors with uncertainty in their future.

"We as a nation have always stood behind our military, to make sure they have the overwhelming superiority and with this sequester, we will no longer be able to do that. With each step backward that we take in terms of preparation, our servicemen and women see increased risk as they step forward onto the battlefield in harm's way.

"Many of my constituents in the First District already know the pain of these cuts -- deployments have been delayed, workers have received furlough notices, and shipyard work has been cancelled. This is just the beginning if Washington doesn't act. That's why I am in Washington today, and have been working for the past 18 months to share the message that this sequester must be averted. Government must be responsible with its spending but these indiscriminate cuts undermine efficient, effective government. I will continue to fight for responsible governing, to avert sequestration and address the true drivers of out-of-control spending in Washington."
