Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced that the economy added 236,000 jobs in February and the unemployment rate fell to 7.7 percent, the lowest level in four years. With private businesses gaining 246,000 jobs, this marks the 36th consecutive month of private sector growth:
"Today's jobs report is another sign of progress for our economy, our workers, our small businesses, and our middle class -- bringing total private sector growth to 6.4 million jobs over the last three years. Yet with every Republican-manufactured crisis, more uncertainty, instability, and insecurity threaten to undermine job creation and stop our recovery in its tracks.
"Our economic growth is now threatened by the indiscriminate, across-the-board spending cuts caused by Republican obstruction. Experts from the non-partisan analysts of the Congressional Budget Office to the Chairman of the Fed tell us that the sequester will cost us 750,000 jobs and slow our economic growth. Meanwhile, Republicans are protecting tax loopholes for corporate jets, outsourcing, millionaires, and billionaires rather than solving problems for the middle class, seniors, students, and military families.
"Democrats know that continued job growth demands a balanced approach to our fiscal and economic challenges. That's why we put forward a fair plan that cuts spending responsibly, ends wasteful tax breaks for special interests, and advances the Buffett rule, ensuring the wealthiest pay their fair share. It's time for Republicans to allow a vote on this proposal and work together to create jobs, grow the economy, strengthen the middle class, and responsibly reduce the deficit."
