Ayotte: Lack of Budget Paved Way for Sequestration Mess

Statement

U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) released the following statement today, which marks 1,400 days since the Democrat-controlled Senate last passed a budget:

"During the nearly four years since Senate Democrats last passed a budget, nearly $6 trillion has been added to our debt. The lack of a regular budget process is also a major reason why we're facing across-the-board sequestration cuts at the end of this week. Americans are tired of spending showdowns, and the President and Congress must work together on a serious plan that reduces wasteful spending, reforms our broken tax code, and puts our entitlement programs on a sustainable path. And that should start with adopting a fiscally responsible budget."

Earlier this year, Senator Ayotte helped introduce the "No Budget, No Pay Act," which would dock pay for Members of Congress for failure to pass a budget resolution and regular appropriations bills before the start of the federal fiscal year.
