Statement from Congressman Holding on Passage of H. Res. 65, Condemning the Government of North Korea

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Today Congressman George Holding (NC-13) issued the following statement regarding House passage of H. Res. 65, condemning the Government of North Korea for its violations against United Nations Security Council resolutions regarding nuclear activity:

"The message of this legislation is simple -- North Korea's blatant disregard for the U.N. Security Council and the international community as a whole cannot be tolerated. The North Korean government has repeatedly ignored the Council's resolutions to cease their nuclear program. They have outlined goals of causing harm and destruction to the United States and our allies and have threatened regional peace. North Korea's actions have been unsettling, and we must address the dangerous threat that North Korea poses.

As a cosponsor of this legislation and a Member of the Asia and Pacific Subcommittee, I look forward to examining what further we must do in Congress to protect national security and enhance regional safety by targeting the regime's source of funding to dismantle their military capabilities."

Background: On February 12, 2013, North Korea exploded a nuclear device, the third of its nuclear missile tests; this was in clear violation of several U.N. Security Council Resolutions.

H. Res. 65 passed the House today by a vote of 412 yeas to 2 nays. H. Res. 65 condemns the Government of North Korea for its repeated violations of multiple U.N. Security Council resolutions, its testing of nuclear devices, and its recurrent threats against international peace and unified relations. Congressman Holding is a co-sponsor of the legislation, which was introduced by Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce.
