Congressman Sam Farr (D-Carmel) issued the following statement after President Obama's speech today in Las Vegas about immigration reform:

"During the campaign, the President made it clear that immigration reform was a priority. In today's speech he outlined a clear path forward that is tough, fair and practical. It requires responsibility from those who are here illegally and those who hire them, guaranteeing that everyone is once again playing by the same rules.

"On the Central Coast, we understand the important role guest workers play in our agriculture community. Any immigration package that comes out of Washington must provide farmers, ranchers and agricultural producers here in California with a legal, stable workforce. As we work together in Washington to address this problem, I will make sure that this is a priority in the debate.

"Americans know that our immigration system is broken. The American dream historically promised to immigrants has been denied to an entire generation. Congress must act now to pass comprehensive immigration reform to fix our broken system and bring 11 million people out of the shadows."
