Rep Speier Looks To Make Significant Impact On Nation's Gun Laws

On the heels of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force's announcement of its recommendations, Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) who served as a Vice Chair of the Task Force is advocating measures that go beyond the basic principles.

"The principles we developed together on the Task Force are a first step toward passing laws that will make us safer from gun violence," said Speier.

Most Americans support stricter controls on gun sales and ownership, according to polling results released today by Quinnipiac University. The polls show 92% support for mandatory background checks and over 50% support for bans on assault weapons and high capacity magazines.

Speier added, "I support the ban on new sales of assault weapons and high capacity magazines. I will also introduce additional legislation to make Americans safer. This includes addressing the importation of assault weapons; creating and funding state programs to identify and retrieve guns from individuals who illegally possess them; bolstering the background check system to create more data sharing between state and federal law enforcement agencies; funding more research and development for gun safety technologies; and efforts to support local sheriffs and police departments who organize gun buy backs in their communities."

Nearly 700 guns were turned in at a San Mateo County anonymous gun back event held last month by Speier and local officials. Taken off the street were 24 assault weapons, 285 hand guns, and 371 long guns. Pictures of the event are available here.

"We need to ask ourselves, at what cost will we continue to ignore gun violence prevention in our country? Inaction is no longer an option. We must fully enforce our existing gun safety laws and also enact additional common sense reforms that will make us safer," said Speier.

Speier is the author of the Gun Transparency and Accountability Act of 2013, H.R. 431, that would abolish three special interest amendments that handcuff law enforcement when it comes to tracking down criminals who illegally buy and sell guns.
