Congressman Bera Statement on Super Storm Sandy Aid Bill

Congressman Ami Bera(CA-07) released the following statement following his vote on the Sandy Aid bill:

"I was proud to vote for the funding to help the victims of super storm Sandy that passed the House of Representatives today. This kind of emergency aid is important and it's precisely the kind of thing we are sent to Congress to do. However, I decided to join my Sacramento-area colleague Congresswoman Matsui in opposing the Republican-authored rules package that denied my House colleagues an opportunity to vote on an amendment authorizing flood protection projects like The Natomas Levee Improvement Project. Our levees in the Natomas area are vulnerable and in dire need of upgrades. As vital as aid for communities facing disasters is, it's just as important to prevent damage due to natural disasters in the first place. I will continue to work with my colleagues to address this critical preparedness issue affecting my home district."

Congressman Ami Bera represents Sacramento County in the 113th Congress. A lifelong Californian and first generation American, Bera is a medical doctor and the only Indian American currently serving in Congress. He and his wife Janine live in Elk Grove with their 15-year-old daughter Sydra.
