Today, the Democratic Caucus selected Congressman John Garamendi (D-Fairfield, CA) as a Member of the House Agriculture Committee. Because the Congressman also serves on the Transportation and Infrastructure and the Armed Services committees, he sought and obtained a waiver to serve on this third committee.
Upon joining the Agriculture Committee, Congressman Garamendi said, "I am extremely grateful for the outpouring of support from local agriculture groups. Without their advocacy in the Halls of Congress to make sure our region had a voice on the Agriculture Committee, this wouldn't have been possible."
Garamendi continued, "On the Committee, I will be a champion for California's agricultural economy. Our farmers work hard and deserve a Representative who rolls up his sleeves and gets to work for them. My highest priorities are promoting regional agricultural commerce and research, including our robust rice industry, our wide variety of specialty crops, and the research at UC Davis; investing in conservation programs that are important for our environment and for our region's many duck hunters; and ensuring food security to make sure that children and families in our communities don't go to sleep hungry."
The Third Congressional District, which Garamendi represents, is home to a wide variety of crops and commodities, including rice, stonefruit, almonds, walnuts, plums, wine grapes, milk products, and cattle. The District's products have a total annual market value of approximately $3 billion. The District is also home to UC Davis, which boasts the world's best agriculture and agricultural research departments.
Congressman Garamendi and his wife Patti manage a cattle ranch and a pear orchard at their home in Walnut Grove.
