Today, the Peace Corps announced that UC Davis ranks number 17 nationally on the list of large colleges and universities with alumni currently serving as Peace Corps Volunteers. Currently, 60 Aggie alumni are serving abroad as Peace Corps Volunteers. Congressman John Garamendi (D-Fairfield, CA), who represents the City of Davis in Congress and served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ethiopia with his wife Patti, issued the following statement congratulating UC Davis:
"Peace Corps provides a remarkable opportunity for Americans to serve their country abroad.
"It is no surprise that UC Davis, a school that is world renowned for training the leaders of tomorrow, would send their alumni around the world to continue the Peace Corps role of serving and assisting economic, social, and agricultural development."
Three of Congressman Garamendi's children graduated from UC Davis. His wife Patti served as Associate Director of Volunteer Recruitment for the Peace Corps during the Clinton Administration.
