2 Percent

Dear Friends,

Can the federal government cut 2% of its budget? President Obama and his allies insist this is impossible and taxes must be raised instead. His position is especially unreasonable considering taxpayers are still absorbing the impact of the last tax hike he demanded just 8 weeks ago as part of the fiscal cliff deal.

Remember, besides the income tax hike and new Obamacare taxes, many Americans have seen their paychecks shrink by 2% due to the payroll tax increase. It boils down to this: the President believes middle class families can survive on 2% less but the federal government cannot.

Nobody claims sequestration is the ideal way to cut. The main flaws in this approach are a lack of mandatory spending reforms and disproportionate impact on national defense. For these reasons, the House has twice passed bills to replace sequestration with smarter cuts, but both bills were killed in the Democrat-controlled Senate.

I would like to see negotiations resulting in a smarter way to cut spending. Unfortunately, thus far the Democrats insist on yet another tax hike as the price of any deal. Given the enormous amount of debt we already have accumulated, the least the federal government can do is cut spending by 2% without resorting to tax increases.

Stay in touch and God bless,
