Hartzler Thanks our Food Producers During Thank a Farmer Week

Statement

Date: Feb. 14, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (MO-4) is happy to recognize the Missouri Farm Bureau's Thank a Farmer Week by thanking our food producers for ensuring citizens of the Fourth Congressional District and the entire United States have access to a safe, plentiful, and affordable food supply.

"We are truly blessed to be living in a country in which food is readily available and at affordable prices," said Hartzler. "U.S. consumers spend slightly less than 10 percent of their disposable income on food -- less than any other country in the world. In addition, one farmer produces enough food and fiber for 154 people in the United States and around the world."

"Farming is family tradition in Missouri," added Hartzler. "97 percent of U.S. farms are owned by individuals, family partnerships, or family corporations. As someone who grew up as a farm girl near Archie and who now lives on a working farm near Harrisonville, I understand the challenges and appreciate the good work done by farmers and ranchers in our area, and I am proud of what they do to feed and clothe their families and the families of other Americans."

Congresswoman Hartzler proudly serves on the House Agriculture Committee.
