Congressman Bill Enyart Announces Southern Illinois Gun Task Force

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Bill Enyart announced today he will form a Southern Illinois Gun Task Force. In light of the Obama Administration's proposed gun control plan, Enyart will convene stakeholders across Illinois' 12th district to address protecting gun owners and 2nd Amendment rights while addressing mental health concerns, and reducing gun violence.

Enyart, the retired Adjutant General of the Illinois National Guard, is a proud gun owner, avid hunter and conservationist. Enyart named Perry County Clerk Kevin Kern to head the Southern Illinois Gun Task Force. Enyart and Kern will soon name Task Force Members and meet in the coming weeks.

Congressman Bill Enyart said: "We have heard from the President, and it's time to hear from Southern Illinois because it is essential that our Southern Illinois values are protected. This Southern Illinois Gun Task Force is an important step to ensure we safeguard our 2nd Amendment rights, address barriers to mental health care, punish offenders who lie on background checks, and work responsibly to reduce gun violence. It is disappointing that the President chose to handle this important issue through executive order. That is why I look forward to working with Kevin and the Southern Illinois Gun Task Force to draw on the depth of experience and diversity in Illinois' 12thdistrict and start a serious dialogue."

Southern Illinois Gun Task Force Head & Perry County Clerk Kevin Kern said: "I'm pleased to work with Congressman Bill Enyart to form the Southern Illinois Gun Task Force. There is an important debate being waged across the nation, and by bringing together folks across the district - from gun owners to law enforcement officials to trusted community and faith leaders - we can start a conversation where all of Southern Illinois voices are heard."

Enyart concluded: "We have an opportunity to come together as neighbors - from Belleville and East Saint Louis to Sparta to Marion to Jonesboro to Carbondale - to put our Southern Illinois way of life first and strengthen our communities."
