Dalrymple Presses HUD for Additional Flood Recovery Assistance for Minot, Ward County

Press Release

Location: Bismarck, ND

Gov. Jack Dalrymple today met with officials from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to press for greater disaster recovery assistance for the city of Minot and Ward County. Dalrymple also plans to visit with HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan on Sunday to discuss the need for greater disaster assistance.

"I impressed upon them the severity of the 2011 flood event in Minot and Ward County and that we don't think the flood's magnitude has been fully realized by the federal government," Dalrymple said.

Congress has approved $50.5 billion in supplemental disaster relief funding to assist victims of Hurricane Sandy and other natural disasters. The federal appropriation includes $16 billion for HUD's Community Development Block Grant disaster recovery program for events occurring in 2011, 2012 and 2013. The grant program provides communities with resources to address a wide range of development needs and disaster recovery assistance.

Dalrymple said North Dakota's Congressional Delegation understands the need for additional federal assistance in the Minot area and that's why the delegation worked to ensure that Minot and Ward County are eligible for supplemental disaster recovery funding.

The 2011 Mouse River flood forced the evacuation of about one-fourth of Minot's population and damaged or destroyed about 4,000 homes.
The HUD officials who met with Dalrymple today were: Peter Kovar, Assistant Secretary for Congressional and Intergovernmental Relations; Fred Tombar, Senior Advisor to the Secretary on Disasters and Stanley Gimont, Director of Block Grant Assistance.
