Rep. McKinley to President Obama: Stop Misleading the Public on the Sequester

Location: Washington, DC

Rep. David B. McKinley, P.E. (R-W.Va.) is asking President Obama to produce a plan to replace the across-the-board cuts from sequestration rather than blaming Republicans. The sequestration cuts are scheduled to go into effect on March 1st.

"With only days to go before across-the-board spending cuts will go into effect, President Obama is traveling the country and holding events to place the blame on House Republicans rather than working with Congress to find a solution," said McKinley.

"The President continues to mislead the American people by claiming sequestration is the brainchild of Republicans in Congress when the facts clearly show it was his own idea," said McKinley. Bob Woodward reported in his book The Price of Politics that sequestration was President Obama's idea, an assertion confirmed by White House Press Secretary Jay Carney last week.

"In November 2011 the President went so far to say he would "veto any effort to get rid of those spending cuts,'" added McKinley. "President Obama has the right to change his mind on the plan he proposed and signed into law, but that does not give him license to demonize the same people who compromised with him in good faith and accepted his idea," said McKinley.

"Across-the-board cuts are not the best way to cut spending, but the question remains how do we replace them while still controlling spending," said McKinley. "House Republicans passed two separate bills to replace the sequester with targeted spending cuts. Yet the Senate has refused to take action, and the President hasn't offered a plan beyond another tax increase."

"Americans can handle the truth," McKinley added. "They want all sides to work together and find a solution to our spending problem, not score political points. Until the President offers a realistic plan to replace the sequester and cut spending, that won't occur."
