Gov. Dave Heineman today will sign LB 125 into law, a bill to reduce the size of a Class V school board from twelve members to nine members, and to draw new election district boundaries. Currently, Omaha Public Schools is the only Class V school district in Nebraska.
"We need to focus on individual and school academic achievement and growth," said Gov. Heineman. "Omaha Public Schools needs a new leadership and a new law firm. They need to focus on the priority, which is the students, and make decisions that put students first. Providing our students with a quality education is essential to Nebraska's future."
Sponsored by state Sen. Scott Lautenbaugh of Omaha, LB 125 requires all nine school district representatives be elected at the same time as municipal city elections in May of 2013. All candidates for election for the Class V school board, both incumbents and non-incumbents, would be required to file for election by March 1, 2013. In subsequent years, all school board elections would occur during the statewide general election.
