Senator Blunt To Serve As Ranking Member For Commerce Subcommittee On Surface Transportation

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (Mo.) announced today that he will serve as the Ranking Member of the Commerce Subcommittee on Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Infrastructure, Safety, and Security. The subcommittee has jurisdiction over the safety, security and infrastructure of the country's freight and passenger transportation networks.

"I'm looking forward to joining this subcommittee, which will play an important part in the reauthorization and funding of most major federal transportation programs that are set to expire next year," said Blunt.

Specifically, the subcommittee will focus on the future of freight and passenger rail traffic, pipeline security, highway safety standards, the marine transportation system, and the long-term transportation and infrastructure goals of the Department of Transportation (DOT).

Missouri has nine commercial passenger airports and 4,400 miles of main rail track that are operated by 19 different railway companies. In addition, the state is home to thousands of miles of pipeline carrying American energy to families and job creators. Missouri also sits at the nexus of the Interstate Highway System, which includes two of the major North-South Interstates in the United States, I-35 and I-55; the major East-West Interstate, I-70; as well as 16 other major Interstates.

Blunt also serves as a member of the Commerce Subcommittees on:
* Aviation Operations, Safety, and Security
* Communications, Technology, and the Internet
* Competitiveness, Innovation, and Export Promotion
* Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Insurance
